Inspired by quirky natural history, I test hypotheses about signals and structures by combining field ecology and experiments with a variety of quantitative approaches across disciplines. Together with collaborators, I address research topics such as:
  • The role of social dominance in behaviour and physiology
  • Behavioural flexibility in signalling
  • Individual contributions to public goods
  • Coevolution and adaptive resemblance
  • Causes and consequences of diversity in nesting behaviour and nest structures
The main subjects of these research projects are the African weavers and brood parasitic cuckoos, which we study at field sites in Southern Africa and the UK.
